When we talk about oldies radio, it is so much interwoven into other oldies topics. For the purpose of understanding oldies radio, you have to be familiar with what oldies music and oldies artists. Oldies music is not the music of the 24th century which we are in. As the name implies, oldies music are the music of long ago, not the ones in this present generation. They are music of the 1940s, 1950s, downwards to 1990s. Now that you have seen what oldies music are, let us now get to the theme of this particular article.
It is very important to note that those particular old times of music had stars who were popular in them, just like we have popular music stars today too. These popular music stars of those times are referred to as the top oldies music stars or celebrities. What is an oldies radio? Having seen what oldies music and their celebrities are, we can now have a better understanding of oldies radio. Oldies radio is a type of radio format or system that has a playlist(s) which is a compilation of top, popular songs from periods of 15 to 55 years from the present time. Let us take into notice the fact that oldies have their genre of music to be majorly classic rock and pop-rock. This was around the middle of the 20th century period, that is, the mid-1950s to the 1980s. Let us do a time and period analysis. In the 1980s and 1990s, oldies were referred to as music which was in the time frame of 15 years from before the start of rock and roll to the start of the singer-songwriter period of the 1970s. If we are to do a calculation in years, this would bring us to a period between 1955 to 1972. This calculation though is not standard for all stations, some oldies radio might choose to stick with the period of 1950 to 1969.
There was then an interesting twist to oldies radio from the period of 2000s upwards. What was this twist? Songs from the 1970s we’re included in the oldies compilation and likewise, songs from early 1980s were also included. Also important about the oldies is the fact that they are classified. Newly included oldies from the early 1980s are referred to as classic hits so as to make a distinguishing from “old” oldies.
